I would like to congratulate the opening of the second Asia Song Festival Hong Kong '97. Hong Kong will see a great change this year and it is our honour and great pleasure to hold this festival here in such a special year.
In order to understand the importance of Hong Kong. we must look back into the history of East Asia.
Hong Kong has been a unique city since the beginning of 20th century. Open to the world, Hong Kong has truly been an international city, not only politically and economically, but also culturally. it has played an important role in the international exchanges of popular songs. On 1 July 1997. Hong Kong will be returned to China. The eyes of the whole world are focusing on what changes will take place in Hong Kong afterwards.
People in the music industry including us arc sincerely hoping that "new" Hong Kong will contribute furthermore to the promotion of the international exchanges of popular songs. Asia Song Festival, Hong Kong '97 may be a parting gift to the "present" Hong Kong in this sense.
